Breast Ptosis

Breast ptosis refers to the natural sagging or drooping of the female breast, which is a normal consequence of aging. The degree of ptosis is influenced by several factors:

  • Number of pregnancies: More pregnancies can increase the likelihood of ptosis due to repeated stretching of skin and ligaments.
  • Body mass index (BMI): Higher BMI and significant weight changes can stretch breast tissue and skin.
  • Bra cup size: Larger breasts are more prone to sagging due to gravity and tissue weight.
  • Smoking: Smoking accelerates loss of skin elasticity, increasing ptosis risk.
  • Menopause: Post-menopausal women may experience increased ptosis due to loss of skin elasticity and glandular atrophy.

Contrary to popular belief, breastfeeding does not significantly increase breast sagging. Wearing a bra has not been conclusively shown to prevent ptosis, though it may provide comfort and support.

Plastic surgeons categorize ptosis by the position of the nipple relative to the infra-mammary fold. In advanced stages, nipples may point downward below the fold.
