Android Adipose Depots
Android adipose depots describe central or abdominal fat accumulation (the so-called "apple" shape). This pattern is more commonly seen in males but can increase in females during menopause or in metabolic conditions.
Anatomy & Physiology
- Android fat includes both subcutaneous and visceral fat components; visceral fat surrounding internal organs has a stronger correlation with metabolic risk factors such as insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease.
- Hormonal shifts (reduced oestrogen, increased androgens, cortisol) promote central fat deposition.
Cultural Significance
- Android distribution has different cultural readings: in some aesthetics it is less eroticised than gynoid patterns; in others, a robust midsection may connote strength or maturity.
Clinical Relevance
- Android fat carries greater cardiometabolic risk compared to gynoid fat. Interventions aimed at reducing visceral fat focus on lifestyle, pharmacotherapy, and occasionally surgical options for weight reduction.
