Clinical Significance of the Male Reproductive System

Chromosomal Abnormalities

  • Klinefelter's syndrome (XXY): Causes infertility, small testes, and reduced testosterone.
  • Turner syndrome (XO): Rare in males, but can affect sexual development.
  • Androgen insensitivity syndrome: XY individuals with resistance to androgens, leading to female or ambiguous genitalia.

Common Disorders

  • Cryptorchidism: Undescended testes, increases risk of infertility and testicular cancer.
  • Hypospadias: Urethral opening on the underside of the penis.
  • Erectile dysfunction: Inability to achieve or maintain an erection.
  • Prostate enlargement/cancer: Common in older men, affects urination and sexual function.
  • Infertility: Can result from blockages, hormonal imbalances, or genetic factors.
