Clinical Significance of the Male Reproductive System
Chromosomal Abnormalities
- Klinefelter's syndrome (XXY): Causes infertility, small testes, and reduced testosterone.
- Turner syndrome (XO): Rare in males, but can affect sexual development.
- Androgen insensitivity syndrome: XY individuals with resistance to androgens, leading to female or ambiguous genitalia.
Common Disorders
- Cryptorchidism: Undescended testes, increases risk of infertility and testicular cancer.
- Hypospadias: Urethral opening on the underside of the penis.
- Erectile dysfunction: Inability to achieve or maintain an erection.
- Prostate enlargement/cancer: Common in older men, affects urination and sexual function.
- Infertility: Can result from blockages, hormonal imbalances, or genetic factors.
