Bulbourethral Gland (Cowper's Gland)

The bulbourethral glands, also known as Cowper's glands, are two small exocrine glands located below the prostate and on either side of the urethra. They are part of the male accessory glands.

Function

  • Secrete a clear, slippery fluid (pre-ejaculate) during sexual arousal.
  • Lubricates the urethra and neutralizes traces of acidic urine, preparing the way for sperm during ejaculation.

Anatomy

  • Each gland is about the size of a pea.
  • Ducts open into the proximal part of the spongy urethra.

Clinical Relevance

  • Blockage or infection can cause discomfort or contribute to infertility.
