Heels — Types & Materials
Types of Heels
Common heel forms writers will encounter:
- Stiletto — tall, thin heel (associated with glamour and sexuality).
- Block / chunky — broad heel offering more stability.
- Wedge — continuous sole from heel to toe, used for comfort and retro looks.
- Kitten — low, dainty heel (often playful or professional).
- Platform — added sole under the ball of the foot raising overall height.
Materials
Heels have been made from wood, leather, cork, stacked leather, steel cores (for slim heels), plastics and resins. The sole materials (leather/suede/rubber) alter sound and grip — useful details for scenes.
Writing cues
- Choose a heel type to match tone: stilettos for danger or seduction, block heels for practicality, wedges for casual summer looks.
