Bed Bug

Bed bugs are small, parasitic insects (genus Cimex) that feed on the blood of humans and animals, usually at night. Bed bugs hide in mattress seams, bed frames, and cracks near sleeping areas. Their bites can cause itching, skin rashes, and allergic reactions, but they are not known to transmit diseases.

Signs of Infestation

  • Itchy, red bites on exposed skin
  • Small blood stains on sheets
  • Dark spots (excrement) on bedding or furniture
  • Live bugs or shed skins in mattress seams or cracks

Prevention and Control

  • Regularly inspect and clean bedding and mattresses
  • Use protective covers on mattresses and pillows
  • Reduce clutter around sleeping areas
  • Wash bedding in hot water
  • Seek professional pest control for severe infestations

Health Effects

Bed bug bites can cause discomfort, sleep disturbances, and anxiety. Scratching bites may lead to secondary infections. See Bedding and Sleep for more on sleep hygiene.
