Cannabis Harm Reduction

Cannabis Harm Reduction

Practical steps to reduce risks for people who choose to use cannabis.

Practical tips

  • Prefer regulated products with clear labelling of THC/CBD content.
  • Choose lower-THC or balanced THC:CBD strains if sensitive to anxiety or psychotomimetic effects.
  • Avoid smoking when possible — use vapourisers with tested devices or non-combustible products.
  • Start low, go slow for edibles and concentrates; wait at least 2 hours before redosing edible doses.
  • Avoid use in adolescence, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Know personal and family psychiatric history; avoid heavy use if there's a history of psychosis.

First aid for overconsumption

  • Reassurance: acute intoxication rarely requires medical treatment; provide calm environment and reassurance.
  • Hydration & rest: help the person lie down and hydrate if needed.
  • Seek help if there are signs of severe intoxication: chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe agitation or psychosis.
