Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia is hair loss caused by chronic tension on follicles from tight hairstyles or headgear.

Risk factors

  • Frequently wearing tight ponytails, buns, braids, extensions, or tight head coverings.
  • The “fringe sign” (retained tiny hairs along the hairline) can be an early clue.

Prevention & course

  • Reduce tension, vary styles, use gentle accessories; early changes can allow regrowth.

Writing Tips

  • Use sensory details: scalp tenderness after a long day in a tight style, the relief when loosening it.

Example

"She eased the elastic free and felt the ache at her temples fade, a halo of short hairs springing back at her hairline."
