Vasopressin

Vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone, ADH) is a peptide hormone closely related to oxytocin. It is produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary. Vasopressin regulates water balance in the body by increasing water reabsorption in the kidneys and constricting blood vessels. It also plays roles in social behavior, pair bonding, and stress response, often in coordination or opposition to oxytocin.

Functions

  • Water retention and kidney regulation
  • Blood pressure control
  • Social recognition and bonding (especially in males)
  • Modulation of stress and aggression
