Dermatochalasis

Dermatochalasis

Dermatochalasis is a condition characterized by excess skin in the upper or lower eyelids, often associated with aging. It can cause a "baggy" or "hooded" appearance and may obstruct vision if severe.

Causes

  • Age-related loss of skin elasticity and collagen
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Chronic eyelid swelling (edema)
  • Trauma or previous surgery

Symptoms

  • Redundant, loose eyelid skin
  • Puffiness or "bags" above or below the eyes
  • Visual field obstruction (in severe cases)
  • Eye fatigue or heaviness

Treatment

  • Mild cases: No treatment needed unless cosmetic concern
  • Severe cases: Blepharoplasty (surgical removal of excess skin)

Related Conditions

  • Periorbital puffiness
  • Blepharochalasis
