Dermatochalasis
Dermatochalasis is a condition characterized by excess skin in the upper or lower eyelids, often associated with aging. It can cause a "baggy" or "hooded" appearance and may obstruct vision if severe.
Causes
- Age-related loss of skin elasticity and collagen
- Genetic predisposition
- Chronic eyelid swelling (edema)
- Trauma or previous surgery
Symptoms
- Redundant, loose eyelid skin
- Puffiness or "bags" above or below the eyes
- Visual field obstruction (in severe cases)
- Eye fatigue or heaviness
Treatment
- Mild cases: No treatment needed unless cosmetic concern
- Severe cases: Blepharoplasty (surgical removal of excess skin)
