Endocannabinoid System

Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a widespread signalling system in animals composed of endocannabinoids (lipid neurotransmitters), cannabinoid receptors (CB1, CB2, and others), and enzymes that synthesise and degrade endocannabinoids. The ECS helps regulate appetite, pain, mood, memory, fertility and immune responses and mediates many effects of cannabis.

Key components

  • CB1 receptors: Predominantly central nervous system — main target for THC.
  • CB2 receptors: Mainly in immune cells and peripheral tissues.
  • Endocannabinoids: Anandamide and 2-AG among others.

Relevance to writing

  • When describing cannabis effects, referencing the ECS can add precision (e.g., "THC binds CB1 receptors in her brain, flattening the edges of thought"). Keep explanations light in narrative scenes.
